CollabNet-Sponsored Subversion Open Source Community Releases Subversion 1.6

Major New Features Include Tree Conflict Detection, Improved Credentials Management, and Reduced Data Storage Requirements

BRISBANE, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/20/09 -- The CollabNet-sponsored Subversion open source community today announced the general availability of Subversion 1.6, the world's leading software configuration management (SCM) tool for distributed teams. Major new features in the latest release include the ability to detect tree conflicts, improved management of credentials, and reduced repository space requirements. The new software is available immediately as a free download at, and more information is available at

CollabNet founded the Subversion open source project in 2000 and has since been its primary corporate sponsor. CollabNet provides certified binaries, enterprise-class technical support, educational services, and integrations with HP Quality Center and IBM Rational ClearCase for Subversion. Additional certification testing is underway for Subversion 1.6 on Windows, Linux, and Solaris. When available, CollabNet will post certified binaries for free download on its website at

"We continue to be proud sponsors and supporters of the open source Subversion project, and we again congratulate the talented members of the Subversion community on another significant software release," said Bill Portelli, chief executive officer, CollabNet. "The community continuously enhances Subversion with cutting-edge features and functionality targeted to the most demanding enterprises. The 1.6 release, especially with its ability to detect tree conflicts, makes Subversion even more attractive to enterprises engaged in complex parallel development."

Tree Conflict Detection

The most significant feature in Subversion 1.6 is its new tree conflict detection capability. Potential tree conflicts are flagged when users update, merge, or switch code, and they must be resolved before committing changes, ensuring that no conflicts are overlooked. CollabNet's graphical Subversion client, CollabNet Desktop -- Eclipse Edition, offers a wizard that assists in the resolution of tree conflicts raised by Subversion. CollabNet Desktop is open source, and its design and processes for tree conflict resolution may be incorporated into other vendors' graphical clients.

Improved Credentials Management

Subversion 1.6 provides administrators more options for managing authentication data, including support for KWallet (KDE 4) and GNOME Keyring on Linux via a command-line interface. Subversion 1.6 also allows users to cache SSL client certificate passphrases in KWallet, GNOME Keyring, OSX Keychain, and Windows CryptoAPI in encrypted form or in plaintext. When a secure storage option is not available, Subversion will now issue a prompt before storing passwords in plaintext form. A global configuration option can also disable plaintext password storage.

Reduced Storage Requirements

Subversion 1.6 includes several changes that can reduce the space requirements for repositories. The first feature allows for common "representations" of content within the repository to be shared. The space savings vary by repository, but generally yield 15-20% space savings. A new "pack" feature for the FSFS file storage system can yield additional savings based on the number of revisions in the repository. Finally, new Berkeley Database (BDB) repositories now use the same forward delta storage used by FSFS repositories, which has yielded up to 50-60% space savings.

Subversion 1.6 Release Notes and a Subversion 1.6 Quick Reference Card will be available on the Subversion resource page on the CollabNet website at Registration for a free webinar "What's New in Subversion 1.6?" is also available there.
