Ingres Executive to Discuss How Open Source “Under the Radar” Can Promote Innovation in Tough Economic Times

Emma McGrattan, senior vice president of engineering at Ingres and an open source thought leader will speak about innovating on a reduced budget at the upcoming EclipseCon 2009. Ingres Corporation, a leading provider of open source database management software and support services, announced today that Ingres will participate actively in the upcoming EclipseCon event taking place in Santa Clara, CA on March 24-26. The event is the premier technical and user conference focusing on the power of the Eclipse platform. To register, visit: www.eclipsecon.org.

McGrattan will lead a session entitled “Ask Forgiveness not Permission” on Tuesday, March 24 at 2:30 p.m. (PT). She will explain how to creatively promote innovation in companies by using open source software to undertake new projects under the radar. As the downturn hits and budgets shrink, one has to find new ways to innovate and open source enables sandbox projects that can become key to a competitive edge. McGrattan will illustrate this with stories of successful business-critical applications built entirely on open source software.

“Developers need to be creative about sourcing a no or low cost technology stack that they can use as a platform for innovation,” said McGrattan. “Cost cutting first impacts the fun side projects that lead to innovation and advancement. I will show how Ingres, Eclipse, and open source software can enable those side projects to go on for the best of the developer and the company.”

Having been instrumental in open sourcing Ingres, and now responsible for the Ingres Emerging Technologies team, McGrattan knows firsthand how to creatively use open source to promote innovation. A known figure in the open source world, McGrattan is also a board member of the Eclipse Foundation. Never at a loss for words, Emma McGrattan discusses open source in her blog, "The View from 25B" at http://blogs.ingres.com/emmamcgrattan.

In addition, Enrico Schenk, software engineer at Ingres and Eclipse committer, will present a session entitled “Access your Data without Eclipse Clutter.” The session will take place on Thursday, March 26, at 2:30 p.m. (PT) and will explain how to quickly get working with your data. He will show how to use features of Ingres Database to simplify tasks and increase results.
