Ingres Prepares Students for the Future at OSBootCamp 8 and Celebrates Community Achievement

OSBootCamp 8 Focuses on Interpreted Programming Languages and Ingres CAFE is Recognized

Ingres Corporation, a leading provider of open source database management software and support services, announced today two important community events scheduled for Ottawa, Canada. The next Open Source Boot Camp (OSBootCamp) will focus on Interpreted Programming Languages and will take place on Thursday, August 28, at The Code Factory in Ottawa. Prior to the event, interns and organizations who helped create Ingres CAFÉ (Consolidated Application Foundation for Eclipse), will gather to celebrate Ingres CAFÉ winning a LinuxWorld Product Excellence Award. The celebration will take place at 3 p.m. (EST) and OSBootCamp 8 will follow at 6 p.m. The events bring together many influential community members involved in OSBootCamp and who are being honored for their work on Ingres CAFÉ, including representatives of Ingres, Talent First Network (TFN), Carleton University, and the Eclipse Foundation.

OSBootCamp was created by a joint effort between Ingres, TFN, and Carleton University. It is a place for students and developers to learn more about open source communities and projects and to introduce university students and staff to the concepts and realities of open source. OSBootCamp 8 will focus on presentations about Perl, Python and Ruby to help initiate students to the tools necessary to produce interesting contributions to open source projects. For example, Ingres CAFÉ was developed in this manner by a team of interns from Carleton University led by Andrew Ross, senior software engineer at Ingres, and assisted by TFN and Google Summer of Code. Now running on Linux, Ingres CAFÉ bundles together many open source-friendly solutions, including the Eclipse integrated development environment (IDE), Ingres database management system (DBMS), Apache Tomcat, Hibernate and JavaServer Faces (JSF) libraries into a single installable package.

OSBootCamp and the community that has developed around it have enabled the creation of very innovative projects, said Emma McGrattan, senior vice president of engineering at Ingres. Ingres CAFÉ exemplifies the force of open source and how innovation can stem from a great collaborative effort between volunteers, a university, a governmental institution, and corporations. We are looking forward to celebrating the people that made this possible and to continuing our common efforts with OSBootCamp 8 and the next open source projects.
